Terence Crawford is mocking Ryan Garcia for choosing Isaac “Pitbull” Cruz after discussing Teofimo Lopez and the winner of Devin Haney’s proposed fight with Jack Catterall or Liam Paro. His criticism ignores the promotional and championship obligations controlling Ryan’s December choice.
“What happened to all the other people you was talking about fighting? You just be talking and putting on a show,” Crawford posted on X.
December is expected to be Ryan’s final fight under his Golden Boy contract. It would be financial lunacy for him to use that obligation on Teofimo when the same matchup may earn him far more as a free agent.
Crawford understands that calculation. He spent years dealing with Bob Arum and Top Rank before gaining control of his career and securing the Errol Spence Jr. fight on favorable terms. Acting as though Ryan should ignore his contract, broadcast rights, and future negotiating power creates an obvious double standard.
Ryan can fight Cruz, complete his Golden Boy deal, and negotiate with Teofimo without his current promoter controlling the event. If Ryan signs with Zuffa Boxing, his purse and share of the event may be considerably larger on Paramount.
Cruz stopped Nestor Bravo on September 19 and would receive little recovery time before moving from light welterweight to 147 pounds. His short, forward-charging attacks also place him directly in range of Ryan’s check left hook. Ryan would hold major advantages in height, reach, and natural size.
Crawford is correct that Ryan uses famous names to control boxing headlines. He is wrong to treat Cruz as proof that Ryan abandoned Teofimo. Ryan is completing his Golden Boy contract against a marketable opponent while saving his best payday for free agency.
Golden Boy also has little incentive to spend months assembling a Teofimo blockbuster for a fighter preparing to leave. Cruz supplies a recognizable opponent and a sellable December event without using the premier matchup Ryan wants for his promotional future. Teofimo may not be available in December anyway. If the WBA orders him to defend his welterweight title against mandatory challenger Catterall, Lopez must accept the fight or surrender the belt. Catterall has already said he will not step aside.
Vacating would hurt Teofimo’s commercial value. His title is a major part of the sales pitch for a Ryan fight. Facing Catterall is dangerous as well. The British southpaw has the timing, patience, and defensive discipline to beat Lopez over twelve rounds. A loss would remove Teofimo from Ryan’s Cinco de Mayo plans.
Teofimo is trapped in a classic no-win situation. The entire justification for him jumping past 140 to grab the WBA welterweight belt was to establish championship leverage at 147. If he vacates to wait around for Ryan, he instantly surrenders the high ground. Fans and media would torch him for ducking a difficult southpaw in Catterall. Without that belt, Teofimo walks into negotiations with Ryan as an ex-champion coming off an avoidance maneuver, stripping him of the primary bargaining chip that makes a Cinco de Mayo pay-per-view event feel essential.
Taking the Catterall fight is just as risky for Teofimo. Catterall has made a career out of defeating explosive counterpunchers with subtle upper body movement and jabs. Teofimo struggles when opponents refuse to engage on his terms or bite on his athletic traps. If Catterall outpoints him, the Ryan fight disappears overnight. Ryan would have zero incentive to fight a beaten, beltless Lopez when other options exist
If Ryan gets caught or worn down by Pitbull, his leverage for free agency plummets, and the May super fight disintegrates before it even reaches the negotiation table.
Crawford’s other suggested opponents are no more realistic for December. Haney’s legal and promotional issues remain unresolved, while fights involving Catterall or Paro would require separate negotiations and television agreements. Three months is not enough time to clear every obstacle and stage an event of that size.
The gamble is not Ryan’s choice of Cruz. It is trusting Teofimo to keep his WBA belt and survive Catterall before Cinco de Mayo arrives.
