If Teofimo is searching for justification to eventually replace his father, he laid plenty of it out publicly. The problem is that a different voice in the corner would not necessarily have possessed the answer against Shakur. The tactical model was already there.
William Zepeda showed how to make Shakur uncomfortable: stay close, throw constantly, attack the body and deny him the space to reset. Senior certainly could have instructed Teofimo to attempt the same approach. Teofimo simply is not built to fight like that.
Throughout his career, Lopez has been a boxer who loads up on single power shots and then moves back out of range. He is not a volume puncher. Applying nonstop pressure requires exceptional conditioning along with the willingness to absorb punishment while continuing to work. Teofimo has never demonstrated that kind of engine. His reactions to taking clean punches against George Kambosos Jr. and Sandor Martin hardly suggested that turning the bout into a high-contact battle was a realistic solution.
Senior has guided his son for virtually his entire boxing life. He knows those limitations. He could not transform Teofimo into a relentless pressure fighter over one training camp. Asking him to suddenly stay on Shakur’s chest and fire nonstop combinations would have meant rebuilding a fighting style developed over fifteen years.
Fighting outside offered little hope. Teofimo lacked the reach advantage needed to control Shakur with his jab from distance. With the two essentially even in that department, Lopez would have been attempting to outbox an opponent whose jab, timing and movement were clearly superior.
That left Senior relying on the weapon he knew his son could still use: power. Load up, swing for the fences and hope one big shot changed the fight. It failed against Shakur, who avoided isolated attacks and reset before the next one arrived. Still, it may have been the most realistic card Teofimo had to play.
Senior later accepted responsibility, saying, “It was my fault. You can blame it on me,” while insisting the fighter who could not even slip Shakur’s jab was not the son he knew.
Teofimo’s career since leaving lightweight makes the issue larger than his corner. At 135 pounds, his size, youth, speed and power gave him considerable physical advantages. His defining victory came against Vasiliy Lomachenko, an elite opponent who was naturally smaller and late in his prime.
Those advantages became far less pronounced at 140. Teofimo has rarely resembled the destructive lightweight who made his name several years ago. Moving to 147 pounds against Rolando “Rolly” Romero on August 22 removes even more of the physical edge he once enjoyed.
There is another concern a replacement trainer would inherit. Teofimo can look excellent while a fight is going his way, but his composure has repeatedly suffered once an opponent begins having success. When punches start landing, and the crowd reacts, he can become increasingly desperate to produce something dramatic rather than calmly solving the tactical problem.
Kambosos dropped him. Sandor Martin frustrated and hurt him. Against Shakur, Teofimo described the night as a “full blur” and recalled reaching a point where he believed his father was not right and Shakur was already winning.
That tendency makes the Romero fight particularly dangerous. Rolly does not need to dominate every minute to create trouble. If he lands something hard, gets the crowd involved and forces Teofimo into another emotional fight, Lopez’s response to adversity may become as important as anything Senior tells him between rounds.
Teofimo may not like what he discovers if he eventually replaces his father. Match him against someone who gives him countering opportunities and allows him to load up on power shots, and a new trainer may initially look like the solution. Put him against one of the better welterweights who forces him outside his comfort zone, and the same limitations are likely to return.
Senior’s performance against Shakur gives Teofimo a case for making a change. It does not mean a replacement would have solved that matchup.
A new corner cannot turn Teofimo into a fighter he has never been. Senior couldn’t do it either. The tactical model for troubling Shakur existed, but the Lopez corner didn’t have the fighter required to reproduce it.
