Teofimo Lopez and Devin Haney Sign 145-lb Catchweight Bout for August 16th

Teofimo Lopez vs. Devin Haney is reportedly signed for August 16th at a 145-lb catchweight in Saudi Arabia. The catchweight would seemingly be a slight handicap for light welterweight Teofimo (22-1, 13 KOs), who is a lot smaller than Haney (32-0, 15 KOs). The Teofimo-Haney event is expected to be shown on DAZN PPV.

Lopez vs Haney: Saudi Catchweight

Lance Pugmire broke the story about the Teofimo-Haney fight on August 16th. It appears that Teofimo’s public apology to Turki Alalshikh was effective, as he has secured his plan B fight, which he wanted. It’s unclear if Lopez got the money that he was hoping to get.

Haney had hoped to fight a rematch with Ryan Garcia in October, but after his loss to Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero last month, that ruined that option. Devin’s dad, Bill Haney, had been talking up a storm about the Teofimo fight ever since.

Bill wasn’t letting go for nothing. That’s the only fight he wanted, and you can’t blame him. Some dangerous predators at 147 and 140 would be all wrong for his son, Devin, with the way he’s become skittish and gun-shy since that loss.

August 16th DAZN PPV Fight

Haney vs. Lopez fight still needs to be announced by Turki Alalshikh. It’ll be shown on DAZN PPV. The price point will be one that fan will be waiting to hear.

Hopefully, the fight will be more entertaining than the performances Devin and Lopez turned in last month at the Times Square event in New York City. Both resembled track stars, moving around the ring, rarely engaging, and employing a Shakur-esque style that had the small VIP crowd spellbound and stone quiet. It was a one-two punch of pure boredom.

Teofimo needs to resurrect his old entertaining style for the Haney fight to make it worthwhile for the fans who purchase it on PPV. He needs to be a hunter to chase Devin down to force him to engage. As Tim Bradley stated, Haney looks like a classic example of a person with PTSD after his loss to Ryan Garcia.

Haney had the look of pure fear in his eyes in his clash against the slow, faded Jose Ramirez at Times Square. With the reported $10 million that Haney received for the fight, it’s unbelievable that he turned in that kind of performance.

Teofimo’s initial goal was to challenge Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis for his IBF and WBA welterweight titles. When Boots showed no interest, Teo turned his attention to Haney.

The date of August 16th places it on the same night as another card involving a rematch between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach in Las Vegas. It will be interesting to see if the two events interfere with each other.
