Stevenson vs. Roach: Is This the “Big Fight” Boxing Fans Want or a “Foxhole” for Shakur?

Stevenson vs. Roach: Is This the “Big Fight” Boxing Fans Want or a “Foxhole” for Shakur?

Shakur Stevenson says he’d like to fight Lamont Roach next if he can’t get the fight against Gervonta Davis. Stevenson (24-0, 11 KOs) against the highly technical Roach (25-1-2, 10 KOs) would be a “big fight in front of the world.”

Turki Alalshikh would have to be willing to put this defensive match-up together between these two Jerry-esque fighters. I don’t know why he would. It’s just another way for Shakur to get a nice payday without risking his hide against the Murderers’ Row killers at 135 that he’s been avoiding to stay on track for a big payday against Tank Davis.

Still hiding his bruised eyes from the William Zepeda fight last Saturday, sunglass-wearing Shakur is dead wrong. A fight between him and the light-hitting defensive artist Roach, 29, would NOT be a “big fight.” It certainly wouldn’t be one that boxing fans are asking for.

Avoiding Lightweight Killers?

– Andy Cruz
– Abdullah Mason
– Floyd Schofield
– Raymond Muratalla
– Jadier Herrera

Fighting Roach would be the equivalent of a foxhole for Shakur to hide in to avoid the above apex predators that would wreck his chances of getting that Tank Davis mega-payday. I just wish Turki would get a clue and force Shakur to run through this gauntlet to earn a fight against Tank.

Shakur defeated Zepeda (33-1, 27 KOs) by a questionable 12-round decision last Saturday night in Queens, New York. He was hurt in the third round and almost dropped by a left hand from Zepeda.

The Mexican brawler out-punched Shakur in every round of the fight, but was given a raw deal by the judges. This was one of three controversial decisions on the main card, and the worst of them in terms of nonsensical scoring.

Judges’ Baffling Scores

The judges gave Shakur a wide decision win by these scores: 118-110, 118-110, and 119-109. Those translate to 10-2 x 2 and 11-1. They were out of this world bad.

“I’m speaking about the business side. I would love to fight him as a fighter,” said Shakur Stevenson to Ariel Helwani’s channel. “Yes,” said Shakur when asked if he’d like to fight Lamont Roach if he can’t get the fight against Gervonta Davis next.

Boxing Fans’ Poison

A fight between Shakur and Roach would be the worst cup of poison I could think of for fans. It would be poison for the eyes. Turki has got to know that nothing good would come from making this terrible matchup.

“I would love to fight him,” Shakur continued about Roach. “I think me and him make so much sense skillfully. I think he’s one of the skifull fighters at 135 pounds, along with myself. I think we make for a tremendous fight.”

Roach needs to fight someone like Floyd Schofield so he can test his chin. That would be a much better fight than Shakur-Roach. You don’t match two defensive fighters against each other. That’s like taking the negative terminals of two batteries and putting them together. They repel.

“I’m into the best. You’re not fighting the best in your weight class against the guy everybody wants to see you fight,” said Shakur when asked about his thoughts on Tank Davis potentially fighting Jake Paul.

“If I could fight Roach in a big fight in front of the world and display our skills, I’m cool with that,” said Shakur.
