The Pittsburgh Steelers still don’t have a starting-caliber quarterback on the roster heading into the summer. The team did select Ohio State’s Will Howard in Round 6 of the draft, but the 23-year-old needs some time to develop and isn’t ready to be a Day 1 starter.
Pittsburgh is still trying to sign Aaron Rodgers, but the future Hall of Fame signal-caller is taking a long time to make a decision and could end up retiring instead of signing with Mike Tomlin’s squad.
As the Steelers continue to wait for Rodgers, Last Word on Sports’ David Latham believes general manager Omar Khan should look to trade for New York Giants quarterback Jameis Winston.
Mike Tomlin has never posted a losing season, but that could change if he starts Mason Rudolph for all 17 games. While Rudolph has experience in the Steelers offense, he lacks the upside to bring this team on a deep playoff run. Jameis Winston may not be as promising as Aaron Rodgers or even Kirk Cousins, but a trade could add some much-needed firepower to what will probably be a stagnant passing attack
Winston signed a two-year deal with the Giants this offseason, but with Russell Wilson slated to start and 2025 first-round pick Jaxson Dart also on the roster, the former No.1 overall pick may not receive the opportunity to play at all in New York.
The Giants could trade Winston if Dart solidifies himself as the No.2 quarterback. If that happens, the Steelers could target Winston, as the Florida State product could serve as a solid bridge quarterback for Pittsburgh and be a nice backup plan in case Rodgers doesn’t sign.
Additionally, Winston is on a cheap deal that is paying him just $4 million per year over the next two seasons, and the 31-year-old has a ton of experience, starting in 87 games since entering the league in 2015.
Obviously, landing Rodgers would be the ideal scenario. However, if the Steelers are unable to get a deal done with the four-time league MVP, trading for Winston is an option that Pittsburgh would have to consider.
