The Pittsburgh Steelers are still on the hunt for a starting quarterback, as the team lost Russell Wilson and Justin Fields in free agency and are waiting on Aaron Rodgers to make a decision regarding his football future.
With the Steelers in desperate need of a starting-caliber player at the sport’s most vital position, ESPN’s Mike Tannenbaum predicts Pittsburgh will trade up to the No.10 overall pick in April’s draft, which is currently held by the Chicago Bears and select Colorado signal-caller Shedeur Sanders.
Tannenbaum’s proposed trade package has the Steelers sending the No.21 overall pick, No.83 overall pick in Round 3, No.121 overall pick in Round 4, and a 2026 first-round pick to the Bears for the No.10 overall pick, and a 2025 fifth-round selection. Tannenbaum predicts Pittsburgh will use the tenth pick to get their quarterback of the future in Sanders.
“Yes, the Steelers still haven’t signed a starting quarterback. Aaron Rodgers met with the team late last week, but signing him would address only the short term. He’s 41 years old. And as of now, Rodgers is still unsigned — we can’t assume he will definitely come to Pittsburgh. So, I’m making the move to add Sanders,” Tannenbaum wrote.
“I’m calling it now: Sanders projects as a top-15, maybe even top-12 starting QB in the NFL. That would be huge for a Steelers franchise that was 20th in QBR last season (51.3),” Tannenbaum adds.
Sanders had two excellent seasons at Colorado in 2023 and 2024, as the 23-year-old showcased his pinpoint accuracy and turned the Buffaloes’ offense into one of the most productive units in the nation.
Even if the Steelers land Rodgers, the four-time NFL MVP isn’t a long-term solution at quarterback, and it would be wise for Pittsburgh to think about the future sooner rather than later. Trading up for Sanders and sitting him for a year behind Rodgers would be ideal for the Steelers, as Sanders would learn from a future Hall of Fame signal-caller and wouldn’t be thrown into the spotlight immediately.
We’ve seen a plethora of successful quarterbacks who sat behind a veteran in their rookie year, including Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson. Pittsburgh should look to emulate that formula by signing Rodgers and drafting Sanders.
