Steelers predicted to replace George Pickens with WR who last played in 2020 NFL season

Steelers predicted to replace George Pickens with WR who last played in 2020 NFL season

The Pittsburgh Steelers could have a battle on their hands for the No. 2 wide receiver job after trading away George Pickens.

There’s one out of the box possibility that could factor into the picture.

Fansided’s DJ Dunson wants the Steelers to sign a wideout who hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2020, when he was a Steeler.

That’s DJ Cain, who right now is leading the UFL in receiving.

“If the Steelers are going to have a free-for-all to be the WR2, he may as well open it up for the UFL’s best receiver,” Dunson writes. “Cain, 28, is still in his athletic prime, stands at 6-foot-2, and is built like a tank. However, talent is not how he fell out of the league before.

“… In his first training camp, Cain tore his ACL, then fell out of favor with the Colts during his second year. Cain isn’t going to light it up, but given the depths they went to a year ago in search of receiver help, he’s an option worth exploring. Ironically, Cain is also a former teammate of Mike Williams whose stint in Pittsburgh last year started with a splash and ended with a whimper.”

Cain made nine catches across his two healthy NFL seasons spread across the Colts and Steelers. He’d definitely be a surprise to win a job if he signed, but he certainly seems to have grown as a receiver since his last time in the NFL.

And at this point, the possibly Aaron Rodgers-led offense could use all the pass catching help it can get.
