The Pittsburgh Steelers have finally nailed down Aaron Rodgers, but that doesn’t change the uncertainty surrounding the team’s future at the quarterback position.
Set to turn 42 in December, Rodgers is only signing a one-year deal, which means he’s unlikely to be back in 2026, barring immense success and the future Hall of Famer deciding to play another season.
If Rodgers moves on, the Steelers will only have Mason Rudolph and 2025 sixth-round pick Will Howard under contract. There is hope Howard will be able to take Pittsburgh into the future, but we wouldn’t bet on a late-round pick doing that.
As a result, it’s very plausible the Steelers will dip into the 2026 NFL draft for their quarterback of the future, something Matty Kiwoom of Player Profiler has them doing in a new mock draft.
Kiwoom has Pittsburgh picking from the No. 13 spot in the draft order, which means the Steelers don’t make the playoffs in 2025. And, with that pick, Kiwoom chooses South Carolina star LaNorris Sellers as the pick for Pittsburgh.
“The ten-wins-a-season streak is in jeopardy regardless of what Aaron Rodgers does,” Kiwoom wrote. “Mike Tomlin bringing in a freak athlete like LaNorris Sellers would further elevate the excitement in the AFC North.”
Despite some of the players the Steelers have had under center in recent years, the team has put an emphasis on wanting a more mobile quarterback.
Sellers checks that box and then some, with the Gamecocks signal-caller being one of the most electric dual-threat quarterbacks in college football.
Sellers broke loose for 674 rushing yards in 2024 while also throwing for a 65.6% completion rate and 2,534 yards. In all, Sellers scored 25 touchdowns, with seven of those coming on the ground.
When it comes to his arm, Sellers still has some kinks to work out, which is to be expected for a quarterback with just one year as a starter under his belt — but the tools are all there.
Sellers possesses a strong arm and exceptional velocity on his throws that gives him a chance to be able to make all of the throws if he can improve his accuracy and decision-making.
Sellers doesn’t have to declare for the 2026 NFL draft, as he’ll have eligibility left after 2025. However, it he can build upon what we saw in 2024, Sellers could decide to leave South Carolina and may land with the Steelers in Round 1.
