The Pittsburgh Steelers have a new-look quarterback room in 2025, as the team let Russell Wilson and Justin Fields walk in free agency and brought in Aaron Rodgers to be the starter.
Pittsburgh also added Mason Rudolph in free agency and Will Howard in Round 6 of the draft. Rudolph and Howard will likely compete for the backup job behind Rodgers, who is entering his 21st season in the NFL.
With Rodgers on a one-year deal, the Steelers could be searching for a new starting quarterback once again in 2026. Howard could be their answer at the position for the long-term, but PlayerProfiler’s Matty Kiwoom predicts the Steelers will use a Round 1 selection in the 2026 NFL Draft on South Carolina signal-caller LaNorris Sellers.
“The ten-wins-a-season streak is in jeopardy regardless of what Aaron Rodgers does. Mike Tomlin bringing in a freak athlete like LaNorris Sellers would further elevate the excitement in the AFC North,” Kiwoom wrote.
Sellers took over as South Carolina’s starting quarterback in 2025 and showed a ton of promise, tossing 18 touchdowns to seven interceptions with a 65.6% completion rate and 2,534 passing yards. The 19-year-old also showcased his electric rushing ability, tallying 674 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground.
He isn’t a fantastic pocket passer yet, but Sellers should take another step forward this season and could be in contention for the Heisman Trophy. The 2024 SEC Freshman of the Year has an excellent frame for an NFL quarterback at 6-foot-3 and nearly 245 pounds, which allows him to run with power in the rushing attack. If he can become a polished passer, Sellers has a case to be the No.1 quarterback in next year’s class.
The Steelers could use some excitement and dynamic play at quarterback. Sellers could flourish with Mike Tomlin in Pittsburgh and finally be the franchise’s long-term replacement for Ben Roethlisberger, who retired after the 2021 season.
