Steelers predicted to pull off big Day 2 draft trade to move up for 78-TD quarterback

Steelers predicted to pull off big Day 2 draft trade to move up for 78-TD quarterback

The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the teams waiting on quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who is trying to decide between them and the New York Giants now that the Minnesota Vikings appear to have settled on sticking with J.J. McCarthy.

While we firmly believe Rodgers will ultimately choose the Steelers, he isn’t likely to be around for long, as the 41-year-old reportedly wants to play two more years. On top of that, the Steelers are rumored to be offering a one-year contract.

Clearly, Rodgers is not going to be a long-term solution for the Steelers, and they do not have another quarterback on the roster who can be that. As a result, the team should be looking for a quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft.

In a recent mock draft from Pro Football Network’s Ben Rolfe, he has the Steelers making a huge trade with the Dallas Cowboys that gets them back into the second round after they dealt their Day 2 pick for wide receiver DK Metcalf.

The trade sees the Steelers give up pick Nos. 83, 123 and second- and third-round picks in 2026 for pick No. 44. And, with that pick, the Steelers take Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe.

With no second-round pick, the Steelers would have to pay a high price to move up and select Milroe in this mock draft. However, if they sign Aaron Rodgers, they are unlikely to make this move.

Milroe may be the most physically gifted quarterback in this class, but there is enough concern that he is unlikely to be a first-round pick. The raw talent and potential are huge, which will intrigue teams, but the bust potential is equally big.

Milroe is one of the more polarizing prospects in this year’s draft class. While he has all the tools to be successful in the NFL with a big arm and elite athleticism, he’s going to need plenty of development to hit his ceiling. That has led to projections being all over the place in terms of where he’ll land.

“Overall, Milroe possesses all of the physical tools to play QB in the modern NFL. With the right development, he can become an impactful quarterback in the NFL,” The Draft Network’s Keith Sanchez wrote.

Going to Pittsburgh would be a good fit. The Steelers are going to have Rodgers or another veteran under center in 2025, which will allow the Alabama product to sit for a year and improve his game without much pressure.

The compensation in the trade with Dallas is quite hefty, but when it comes to adding a franchise quarterback, there is no price too expensive. If the Steelers believe in Milroe, they should pull the trigger.
