Steelers predicted to lose out on Aaron Rodgers, add former $242 million Pro Bowl quarterback

Steelers predicted to lose out on Aaron Rodgers, add former 2 million Pro Bowl quarterback

The Pittsburgh Steelers still don’t have a starting-level quarterback on the roster, as the team continues to wait for Aaron Rodgers to make a decision regarding his future. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Rodgers “is in no rush at all” to make a decision.

Though the Steelers are eyeing Rodgers to be their starting signal-caller in 2025 and seem to be the favorite to land the former MVP, NFL.com’s Nick Shook predicts Pittsburgh will miss out on Rodgers and re-sign Russell Wilson.

“Cam Heyward is tired of waiting on Aaron Rodgers. Frankly, I am too. Judging by their willingness to submit to Rodgers’ timeline, this isn’t the scenario the Steelers likely envisioned, but it’s the best they can do if Rodgers doesn’t want to be a Steeler. Pittsburgh should stop waiting around and bring back a quarterback who brushed up against his ceiling with the team in 2024 but still owns the passing ability to capitalize on its new receiving duo of DK Metcalf and George Pickens,” Shook wrote.

Wilson is still on the free agency market, and though he has been heavily linked to the New York Giants, the veteran could land back in Pittsburgh if the team can’t strike a deal with Rodgers.

Wilson started 11 games for the Steelers in 2024, and he provided solid play, tossing 16 touchdowns to just five interceptions with a 95.6 passer rating. The 36-year-old led Pittsburgh to a playoff appearance and revived his career after two tumultuous seasons with the Denver Broncos in 2022 and 2023.

Though he isn’t an exciting player and struggled towards the end of last year, Wilson is still an above-average starting quarterback who is a fantastic leader in the locker room and will likely be cheaper to sign than Rodgers. Pro Football Focus projects Wilson will land a two-year deal worth $50 million with $30 million guaranteed and $25 million annually.

Pittsburgh is going all in for Rodgers, but if general manager Omar Khan is unable to land the 41-year-old signal-caller, bringing back Wilson on a one or two-year contract would be a logical move.
