Steelers predicted to have franchise quarterback fall in their lap in NFL Draft

The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of a few remaining teams that have yet to address their starting quarterback situation for 2025. Pittsburgh is one of at least two teams pursuing veteran signal-caller Aaron Rodgers.

Along with the Steelers, the New York Giants are making a push to sign Rodgers, also, and the Minnesota Vikings are hanging around out as a possible landing spot.

Even if the Steelers end up getting Rodgers, there will still be a question mark for the future at the quarterback position, as he’ll likely only give Pittsburgh two years, at most. The situation becomes even more dire if the Steelers miss out on Rodgers, but no matter who Pittsburgh has under center in 2025, they aren’t likely to be a long-term solution.

With all that in mind, The Draft Network’s Ryan Fowler has an ideal scenario for the Steelers in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Fowler predicts that Shedeur Sanders, who is widely considered the second-best signal-caller in this year’s class, will fall into Pittsburgh’s lap at No. 21 overall.

“With Russell Wilson visiting teams in free agency, Justin Fields now in Jets green, and Kyle Allen on the open market, Pittsburgh doesn’t have a QB on the roster aside from Mason Rudolph,” Fowler said of Pittsburgh’s situation. “Enter Shedeur Sanders, who would arrive with immense talent around him in George Pickens, Pat Freiermuth, and the recently acquired DK Metcalf. While it could also be a major clash of personalities, a bunch of alphas in the same offense is the type of group I’d want to go to war with each and every Sunday. Positive correlating surroundings are as important to a young QB as anything, and Pittsburgh has some pieces in place.”

Sanders was once thought to be at least a top-10 pick this year, but things changed drastically after there were reports of negative reviews about the Colorado signal-caller following the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

It’s important to note, however, that there are a lot of smokescreens out there this time of year and this could be another example of that.

With the Steelers expected to have a veteran starter under center in 2025, Sanders would be afforded some extra time to develop in the hopes he can take the starting job in 2026. That would give the Steelers four years to take advantage of a rookie contract at the most expensive position in the NFL.

While we tend to believe the Steelers will target a quarterback after the first round, if Sanders is on the board at No. 21, Pittsburgh will be hard-pressed to pass up on him.
