Steelers predicted to ditch Aaron Rodgers, select polarizing quarterback in Round 1 of NFL draft

Steelers predicted to ditch Aaron Rodgers, select polarizing quarterback in Round 1 of NFL draft

The Pittsburgh Steelers are still waiting on Aaron Rodgers to make a decision on his future. The free-agent quarterback has been linked to the Steelers since the first day of NFL free agency but has yet to sign, and with the draft on the horizon, frustration could be rising in Pittsburgh.

With the Rodgers’ situation still unsolved, CBS Sports’ Mike Renner predicts the Steelers will use the No.21 overall pick in next week’s draft on Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders.

“Call it a slide if you want, but this is where most people I’ve talked to see Sanders as a talent. The Steelers’ desperation outweighs that of any other team in this area,” Renner wrote.

Sanders landing in Pittsburgh has gained some steam over the last few weeks, as the 23-year-old visited the franchise’s facility last week and praised the organization and head coach Mike Tomlin in an interview with Kay Adams immediately after his visit.

“I understand the mindset and why they win a lot,” Sanders said on the Up And Adams Show after his visit with the Steelers. “What he [Mike Tomlin] preaches from the top down is like my dad. It was a 10.”

Sanders would fit well in the Steelers offense, as the dynamic pocket passer does a nice job taking care of the football and is incredibly accurate. Additionally, the Texas native has multiple years of starting experience in college and could immediately step in as Pittsburgh’s starting quarterback in 2025.

Even if the Steelers sign Rodgers and start the future Hall of Famer at quarterback this year, selecting Sanders in Round 1 would still be a possibility. General manager Omar Khan must start prioritizing the future, and taking Sanders to be the long-term solution at the sport’s most vital position would be a logical move from Pittsburgh.
