The Pittsburgh Steelers have hit a rough stretch in the 2024 season, as the team has lost their first-place lead in the AFC North and has dropped the last three games. The Steelers are now 10-6 on the year and will host the Cincinnati Bengals at Acrisure Stadium in Week 18.
The Steelers’ offense has looked completely out of sorts over the last few weeks, especially the passing attack. Quarterback Russell Wilson has thrown just three touchdowns in the past three games, and the veteran hasn’t built solid chemistry with any of his receivers besides George Pickens.
Outside of Pickens, Pittsburgh lacks high-end talent and production at receiver. Calvin Austin III, Van Jefferson, and Mike Williams have shown flashes, but none are capable of being a reliable WR2 on an elite team.
General manager Omar Khan should look to add another playmaker to the offense this offseason, and Last Word On Sport’s Jack Aaron lists the Steelers as a potential landing spot for Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin.
Although he’s only 28, Godwin has managed to play eight NFL seasons, though multiple have ended due to serious lower-body injuries. Though teams might approach him cautiously because of this, he can still be the quarterback’s best friend, as a sure-handed slot receiver. He could be a fit for any team looking to diversify their offense, taking pressure off notable stars
Godwin played just seven games in 2024 after suffering a dislocated knee during Tampa Bay’s Week 7 contest versus the Baltimore Ravens. Before sustaining the significant ankle injury, the 28-year-old hauled in 50 catches for 576 yards and five touchdowns. The best-case scenario for Godwin is a return for the playoffs, but the veteran receiver is still unsure whether he will return in 2024.
Though Godwin has missed most of the season, the 2019 Pro Bowler is still an extremely capable player. The former Penn State standout is a savvy route runner who rarely drops passes and has posted four 1,000-yard campaigns since he entered the league in 2017.
Pairing Pickens with Godwin would give Pittsburgh a versatile receiving duo, as Pickens is an explosive deep threat while Godwin excels in the intermediate passing game. If the 2017 third-round pick isn’t too expensive to sign, the Steelers should consider acquiring Chris Godwin this offseason to bolster a wide receiver room that needs an overhaul.
