Steelers linked to $39 million playoff legend in free agency to replace George Pickens

Steelers linked to million playoff legend in free agency to replace George Pickens

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a glaring need at wide receiver. Though the team added two-time Pro Bowler DK Metcalf to the position group this offseason, they just traded George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys, leaving Metcalf as the only starting-caliber receiver.

The Steelers must find another reliable playmaker sooner rather than later, and CBS Sports’ Tyler Sullivan lists Pittsburgh as a potential landing spot for recently-released free-agent wide receiver Gabe Davis.

“The Steelers are suddenly in need of some receiver depth after trading away George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys on Wednesday. This landing spot would provide Davis the opportunity to carve out a healthy target share. With all that said, the giant caveat for the Steelers is that they are currently still in Aaron Rodgers purgatory, so their quarterback situation isn’t exactly clear at the moment, which Davis may find unappealing,” Sullivan wrote.

Davis played in just ten games in 2024 due to a torn meniscus and wasn’t very productive, posting 20 receptions for 239 yards and two touchdowns. The 26-year-old signed a three-year deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars in free agency last year, but was released by Jacksonville after one season on Wednesday.

Though Davis is coming off an injury-riddled campaign, the UCF product would be a solid addition to the Steelers’ wide receiver room. Davis would compete for the No.2 receiver role and add some speed and big-play potential to Arthur Smith’s offense.

Additionally, the former fourth-round pick should be cheap to sign, given he missed seven games last season and was a non-factor at times when on the field.

Davis wouldn’t solve all of the Steelers’ problems at receiver after trading away Pickens. However, the former Buffalo Bill has shown flashes of dynamic play throughout his career, especially in the playoffs, and could be an electric deep threat for Mike Tomlin’s squad.
