Steelers free agent pitch adds million playoff hero to new-look offense

The Pittsburgh Steelers will field a new-look offense in 2025, as the team will have new starters at multiple positions, including wide receiver.

The Steelers made a massive splash acquisition in the receiver room by adding DK Metcalf in a trade with the Seattle Seahawks. Metcalf will be the team’s No.1 receiver for years to come, but Pittsburgh should get him some help, as they lack other viable receiving options after trading George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys and losing Van Jefferson in free agency.

There are still a couple of potential free agent pass-catchers the Steelers could sign, and the Draft Network’s Justin Melo urges Pittsburgh to get a deal done with Gabe Davis, who was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars in May.

The Steelers are thin on depth at wideout after trading George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys. D.K. Metcalf is the only sure thing in the receiver room right now. The aging Robert Woods is past his prime, and will Roman Wilson take a developmental step forward? Rodgers has always connected with deep-speed receivers. Davis would have a role to play in Arthur Smith’s offense.

Davis visited the Steelers facility on June 4, and though he left without a deal, he is still a possible receiving target for Pittsburgh. The 26-year-old had an injury-riddled 2024 campaign and played just ten games while tallying 239 yards and two touchdowns.

Though he has never been a totally reliable No.2 receiver, Davis showcased his big-play ability and dynamic playstyle during his four-year tenure with the Buffalo Bills. He served as an explosive deep threat for quarterback Josh Allen and scored at least six touchdowns in every one of his seasons with the Bills.

Obviously, the UCF product’s most memorable moment in Buffalo came in the playoffs during the 2021-2022 season, as he posted a 201-yard and four-touchdown game in the divisional round versus the Kansas City Chiefs, a game the Bills lost in unfortunate fashion.

Davis would be a solid fit in the Steelers’ offense, as he would pair well with Metcalf and give quarterback Aaron Rodgers another capable playmaker who can stretch the field. Additionally, Davis shouldn’t cost too much, as he is still getting a ton of money from the Jaguars after his release.

He isn’t very consistent and does have his flaws, but Davis could be in for a bounce-back 2025 campaign in the right situation. Playing with Rodgers in Pittsburgh could unlock the next level of Davis’ game, and that would greatly help a Steelers offense that lacks big-play potential.
