As the Pittsburgh Steelers contemplate their next move at the quarterback position in 2025, speculation about the team possibly turning to New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers has run rampant.
Rodgers spent the last two seasons with the Jets but things did not go as planned. As a result, the team is reportedly set to part ways with the 41-year-old quarterback, which will make him available this offseason.
“Aaron Rodgers flew back to New Jersey last week to meet with the Jets about his future with the team,” FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer posted on X. “Only to be told that the team was moving on from him.
“If that means that he will be a June 1 designation that allows him to sign with any team in the league on March 12 if he decides to continue to play. Given that Aaron made the effort to fly back to discuss his future, all signs point to him continuing to play. It just won’t be for the Jets,” Glazer concluded.
While it remains to be seen if the Steelers will have any interest in Rodgers, one of the Steelers’ key defenders, defensive back DeShon Elliott, made it quite clear he isn’t a fan of his team bringing in the future Hall of Famer.
In the comments section of a social media post saying the Steelers are the current betting favorites to land Rodgers, Elliott revealed he doesn’t want the 10-time Pro Bowler in Pittsburgh.
“Leave his ass at the retirement home,” Elliott wrote.

It’s not crazy to think that the Steelers could have interest in Rodgers. After all, they are certainly targeting a veteran quarterback to start in 2025, whether that be Russell Wilson, Justin Fields, or someone else. And, when it comes to teams in need of a signal-caller, the Steelers offer Rodgers a better chance to win than most.
There have been differing reports on the Steelers’ potential interest. Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported back in January that Pittsburgh is not going to have interest in Rodgers.
“I can tell you it won’t be Aaron Rodgers,” Dulac said of the Steelers’ quarterback plans. “They have no interest in doing that.”
However, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported on Tuesday that the team is going to explore its options, including Rodgers.
“Expect Pittsburgh to explore every option, including potential free agents like (Aaron) Rodgers or Kirk Cousins,” she wrote.
We’ll see if the Steelers end up making a run at Rodgers, and if they land him, it’s going to be an awkward situation for Elliott.
