The Pittsburgh Steelers are patiently waiting on Aaron Rodgers to decide if he wants to play with them or at all. They could view a former Kansas City Chiefs quarterback as a pivot option.
The Chiefs signed Gardner Minshew to back up Patrick Mahomes, thus ending Carson Wentz’s time with the team. Wentz is still a free agent, and Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton tabbed the Steelers as a landing spot as Rodgers mulls retirement.
“Wentz can also be a cheap alternative option for the Pittsburgh Steelers if Aaron Rodgers retires,” wrote Moton. “He’s more mobile and has a bigger arm than projected starting quarterback Mason Rudolph, two quarterback traits that can open up offensive coordinator Arthur Smith’s playbook with DK Metcalf on the roster.”
The Steelers made a blockbuster trade for Metcalf this offseason. Metcalf had a throwing session with Rodgers earlier this offseason, but as it currently stands they do not have any reliable option to throw him the ball. Rodgers noted on the “Pat McAfee Show” that he is in no hurry to sign as he is dealing with undisclosed things in his personal life that are more important than football.
The Steelers are letting Rodgers take his time, and did not draft a quarterback early in the draft. They are banking on the fact that he will eventually join their team. However, if he does not, Wentz could be a decent bridge quarterback.

Wentz was an MVP candidate in his second season before an injury knocked him out, leading the way for Nick Foles to step in and go on a legendary run to win the Super Bowl. In nine seasons Wentz is 47-46-1 as a starter.
