It’s the worst-kept secret in the NFL that the Pittsburgh Steelers are looking to add a veteran quarterback before the 2025 season starts.

For over a month now, the team has been connected to Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers visited with the team back in March, but a deal has been slow to come together, even as there doesn’t appear to be many other fits for the veteran.

The Steelers did sign Mason Rudolph in free agency and drafted Will Howard in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft, but it seems unlikely the team would be comfortable starting either of those guys.

However, what if the team gets tired of waiting on Rodgers? There may be another veteran who could fit in on the roster for 2025 — Kirk Cousins.

The Atlanta Falcons are reportedly open to dealing Cousins as Michael Penix Jr. appears to have a lock on the starting job. David Latham of LWOS recently identified the Steelers as a logical landing spot for Cousins.

Latham offered the following analysis regarding Cousins’ potential fit in Pittsburgh:

As of this posting, the Pittsburgh Steelers have veteran Mason Rudolph battling rookie Will Howard for the starting job. While that could change if and when Aaron Rodgers decides on his future, a Kirk Cousins trade could be the best course of action for this team. The past few years proved that Mike Tomlin’s squad will continue to tread water, and even though Cousins isn’t a Super Bowl-caliber quarterback, he should be good enough to bring a talented team into the postseason.

Cousins just signed a massive deal with the Falcons last offseason. However, just a month later, the team shockingly selected Penix in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. Still, Cousins was the starter for much of the season before finally being benched in favor of the rookie.

With the pairing not going how either side expected, it wouldn’t be surprising to see a parting of ways.

Cousins ended the 2024 season with 3,508 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 16 interceptions in 14 games. While it was a down year for the veteran, Cousins was still coming back from a serious injury and could be better in 2025 after more recovery time.

Overall, Cousins has been selected to four Pro Bowls and has thrown for 4,000+ yards in seven of his 13 seasons. The Steelers made the playoffs with Russell Wilson in 2024, so Cousins could make the team a true contender.
