Steelers building NFL Draft QB backup plan for Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson free agent pursuits

Steelers building NFL Draft QB backup plan for Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson free agent pursuits

The Steelers aren’t leaving any stone unturned when it comes to finding their next quarterback.

It’s well known that Pittsburgh is interested in free agent QB Aaron Rodgers. There’d also be the chance of a Russell Wilson return if Rodgers went elsewhere.

What hasn’t been discussed much is the possibility of the Steelers drafting a quarterback. It sounds, though, like that’s a real option.

The Steelers sent a big group to visit Alabama’s Jalen Milroe on Tuesday night ahead of his Wednesday pro day. Coach Mike Tomlin, GM Omar Kahn and QB coach Tom Arth were all there at dinner with Milroe, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

MORE: Aaron Rodgers has a clear preference in free agency

Pittsburgh currently holds the No. 21 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. Without any trading, it’d likely have to be at that spot that they’d draft the dual-threat Milroe.

Milroe is a polarzing draft prospect. He throws a beautiful deep ball and is a great runner, but he also struggled too often in his final season with the Crimson Tide, including a career-worst 11 interceptions.

Pittsburgh likely won’t be in position to get Cam Ward, Shedeur Sanders or even Jaxson Dart, which could lead to a risk-taking move like reaching for Milroe.

Ideally, the Steelers will know before the draft whether Rodgers, Wilson or neither is on their roster.

Pittsburgh already has veteran Mason Rudolph brought back, and he could start in a pinch if the Steelers draft someone like Milroe, who would need time to develop.

It could be worth the risk for Pittsburgh, who will be seeking to find its next franchise quarterback somewhere. Maybe that somewhere will be in the draft.
