Steelers’ 1st-round pick in midst of crucial position change

Steelers’ 1st-round pick in midst of crucial position change

The Pittsburgh Steelers didn’t really have a choice, but it’s still a challenging maneuver.

They lost left tackle Dan Moore this offseason in free agency. So in his place moves incumbent Broderick Jones.

Jones, a former first-round pick out of Georgia, mostly played left tackle in college. But in the NFL, he has been a right tackle.

The move is going OK and just needs a little more time, Jones told Steelers Now.

“I think it went as good as it could go,” Jones said of his left tackle time in minicamp. “You know, with everything going on — with me moving back to [LT] from [RT]. I still got a couple more weeks to hone in on my skills and continue to develop on the left side — and come in ready for [training camp].”

Realistically, Jones knows he isn’t quite ready yet.

“If I’m being honest, I think I probably do need a couple more weeks,” Jones said. “Not saying I’d be bad, but just for me. Just to feel like I’m in the mindset to play an actual game — versus somebody else other than going against Alex Highsmith or Nick [Herbig].”

Left tackle is going to be as crucial a spot as ever this season for the Steelers.

They’ve got the wrong-side-of-40 Aaron Rodgers suiting up as their quarterback. Jones has to keep his blind spot clean as much as possible.

There are plenty of good edge rushers to deal with in the AFC North, too.

If Jones gets the job done, it’ll be a huge step toward the Steelers having a great season. But if not, things could get rough.
