Six-time Champions League winners set to buy new stadium as club aim for huge boost in attendance

SIX-TIME Champions League winners Bayern Munich are buying a new stadium to boost attendance for their women’s team.

The Bundesliga champions are set to splash £6.5million on the Sportpark Unterhaching, which is located in the southern outskirts of Munich.

The arena, which holds 15,000, will become the new home of Bayern Women.

And it will see the move from the Bayern Campus’ stadium, which only has 2,000 seats.

The switch is expected to see support for Bayern Women skyrocket.

But the stadium will also continue to play host to local club SpVgg Unterhaching, who played in the Bundesliga between 1999 and 2001 but now ply their trade in Germany’s fourth tier.

They had the opportunity to buy the stadium last summer, but opted against moving forward due to costs.

The Sportpark Unterhaching was opened in the early 90s and received an expansion several years later.

It has since hosted various Bundesliga, women’s national team, youth team and German Cup games.

But it will now be the base for Bayern Women to establish themselves as one of Europe’s top teams.

Honorary president Uli Hoeness confirmed: “In Spain or England, top games are packed.

“Here, you must bang the drum to get 20,000 spectators. And when they do come, we hug each other with joy.

“(Increasing attendance) is not so simple. (I’m a) friend of women’s football. Today they really can play well.”

On SpVGG Unterhaching passing up the opportunity to buy the stadium, their president Manni Schwabl added: “Floodlights, lighting parameters, safety issues, pitch heating.

“All of that requires investment. We weren’t sure we could manage it.”
