The Pittsburgh Steelers are still looking for a starting quarterback, as the team waited until Day 3 of the 2025 NFL Draft to add a signal-caller to the roster, which was Ohio State’s Will Howard, and are waiting on Aaron Rodgers to make a decision regarding his football future.
Rodgers could end up signing with the Steelers, but he could also retire. If the future Hall of Famer calls it a career, Behind the Steel Curtain’s Mike Nicastro believes Pittsburgh should target New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr as a backup plan.
“I understand what you’re probably thinking. Why the heck would the Steelers bring in an injured veteran like Carr? Well, the world isn’t exactly their oyster when it comes to adding to that room. It’s slim pickings, and Carr is an option who can provide veteran experience,” Nicastro wrote.
Carr has quietly been a solid starting quarterback over the last couple of years, as he led the Saints to a winning season in 2023 and played well in 2024 before suffering a fractured hand that caused him to miss the final seven games of the season.
The four-time Pro Bowler does a decent job taking care of the ball and is also pretty efficient, completing over 67% of his passes in seven of the last eight seasons.
Obviously, trading for Carr right now would be a massive risk, as he is currently dealing with a shoulder injury and his status for the upcoming season is unknown. However, there’s a chance Pittsburgh runs out of options at quarterback, and trading for Carr may be the only move on the table.
There’s a ton of risk involved in a potential Carr trade, so the Steelers should focus on signing Rodgers or acquiring Kirk Cousins in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons before even thinking about other possibilities.
