Shakur’s “Biggest Fight”: Tank Davis or Delusion?

Shakur’s “Biggest Fight”: Tank Davis or Delusion?

Shakur Stevenson said today that he wants the Gervonta Davis fight next after he defends his WBC lightweight title against William Zepeda this Saturday, July 12th. Stevenson continued to claim that a fight between him and Tank Davis is “The biggest fight in the world.” The reality is that there is zero interest in that fight among fans.

Shakur is increasingly seen as a fake, a “Jerry,” who is just looking for a cash out against Tank Davis. He’s avoiding the top killers like the plague, wanting no part of Andy Cruz and Abdullah Mason.

Whatever popularity Tank once had, he’s ruined it with cherry-picking soft opposition, not fighting the sharks, and getting exposed by Lamont Roach. Now, the biggest fight out there for Shakur would be Andy Cruz or Abdullah Mason, two fighters who would likely beat him handily.

Zepeda Fight: Shakur’s Real Test

It’s way too early for Shakur to be talking about fighting Tank Davis because his fight against Zepeda (33-0, 27 KOs) could result in a massacre, with the Mexican brawler making easy work of him. He’s the type of fighter that Zepeda has destroyed during his career.

To be talking about how a Tank Davis fight needs to happen next suggests that Shakur has become a narcissist, believing he’s better than he is. He looked terrible against the only good fighter he’s faced at 135, Edwin De Los Santos, and no one is buying his excuse for that poor effort, as he looked just as bad against Artem Harutyunyan and Josh Padley.

“During my career, I tried to get a lot of names in the ring. Them guys don’t want to fight for this reason. Some guys are faking sick. I’m getting these big a** checks. I’m living good,” said Shakur Stevenson to Ring Magazine’s YouTube channel.” Whenever these guys decide to grow some balls and jump in the ring, we can make it happen,” said Shakur.

The guys that Shakur has expressed interest in fighting since moving up to the lightweight division:

– Gervonta Davis
– Vasily Lomachenko
– Devin Haney
– Frank Martin
– William Zepeda
– Isaac Cruz

Why Top Fighters Avoid Shakur

Lomachenko was near the end of his career, and understandably, not interested in fighting Shakur after he was booed out of the T-Mobile Arena in his fight against Edwin De Los Santos in 2023. Fighting a Jerry-type of fighter for little money at age 36 wasn’t what Lomachenko was interested in.

Tank Davis wasn’t going to fight Shakur after watching him run from De Los Santos either. The last thing he wanted was to be a part of a fight where he’s chasing Shakur while the crowd boos him in the background.

Shakur doesn’t understand how his game is a pure eyesore for fighters that he wants to fight, and after watching the De Los Santos and Artem Harutyunyan fights, they saw no value in fighting him.

Stevenson’s Claim: Biggest Fight

“For sure, that’s the biggest fight in the world,” said Shakur when asked if he wants to fight Gervonta Davis. “He tries to downplay my skills and act like I’ve done nothing. I’m ready for the fight to happen because he thinks he can beat me, and I think I can beat him.

Stevenson’s mentioning of Tank has drawn criticism from fans, who see this as more clout chasing by him to create fake interest in a fight that fans are NOT interested in watching. Tank is nearing the end of his career and may lose his rematch with Lamont Roach.

The fighters Shakur (23-0, 11 KOs) isn’t mentioning are the top guys that are gunning for him, like Andy Cruz, Abdullah Mason, Raymond Muratalla, and Floyd Schofield.
