Shakur Stevenson: Will He Unleash “100 Different Things” or Revert to Form Against William Zepeda?

Shakur Stevenson says his opponent, William Zepeda, doesn’t know what he’s going to do on July 12th, because he “can do 100 different things” for their chief support bout on DAZN PPV.

Fans Want Action, Not Running

WBC lightweight champion Stevenson (23-0, 11 KOs) states that he can stand in the pocket, make Zepeda miss, or move around the ring. It’s the moving around part that fans have seen plenty of from Shakur, and they don’t want to see anymore from him.

“On July 12th, they don’t know what I’m coming to do. I got different things to my game. I can box and move. I can stand there in the pocket and make you miss. I can do a 100 different things to him to where he don’t know what’s happened on July 12th,” said Shakur Stevenson to DAZN Boxing, talking about his fight against William Zepeda.

It’s the things that fans have seen in Shakur’s game that have put them off wanting to watch him fight. They’ve seen how Stevenson moves and chooses not to engage many times. What they haven’t seen is him staying in the pocket when fighting big punchers.

Shakur’s Past Foes Criticized

Most of the opposition Shakur has faced has been lesser B-level or washed-up fighters, such as Jamel Herring and Oscar Valdez. The only times Stevenson has stayed in the pocket are when fighting weak punchers, like Josh Padley and Artem Harutyunyan.

“It’s very possible [that he can hurt Zepeda]. These people think I can’t crack. These people think, ‘All you do is run.’ That’s the wrong logic of me. I’m a fighter, and I’m going to fight,” said Stevenson.

Shakur hasn’t shown that he can punch during his career, and you can’t count the guys he’s knocked out because they’ve been lesser fighters.

Stevenson’s Winning Pressure on July 12

“I’m not coming there to lose. William Zepeda is not a guy that is going to allow you to move all around the ring and not cut off the ring. He’s not a guy that’s not going to allow you to engage in a fight. I’m here to win,” said Shakur.

Fans want to be entertained. So, hopefully, Shakur comes to fight, and not retreat around the ring, playing keep-away for 12 dull rounds. Turki Alalshikh will likely be stomping mad if Shakur puts on a Tom and Jerry fight, because he chose to use him for this event despite his long history of boring performances.

You can’t expect a runner to change just because you said you don’t want Tom and Jerry fights. Stevenson has been a mover since his amateur days, and that’s why he lost in the Olympics. He didn’t want to engage.
