Shakur Stevenson: 10-lb Rehydration Clause for Conor Benn Fight at 147

Shakur Stevenson: 10-lb Rehydration Clause for Conor Benn Fight at 147

Shakur Stevenson says he would want a 10-lb rehydration clause if he fights Conor Benn at 147. he would still like some kind of weight handicap to make the fight fairer.

Benn (23-1, 14 KOs) might be Stevenson’s best option for a big payday if Gervonta Davis isn’t available to fight. Tank still has a rematch with Lamont Roach that he needs to take care of first.

10-lb Rehydration Clause

“I’ll fight him,” said Shakur about Conor Benn. “He’s not that big. I would want the same hydration clause he put on Chris Eubank. I want that,” said Stevenson on wanting a 10-lb rehydration clause for the Benn fight,” said Shakur Stevenson to Cigar Talk.

Turki Alalshikh mentioned wanting to first try to set up a fight with Gervonta Davis for him. If he can’t do that, he’ll look for other options. Benn and Shakur share the same promoter in Eddie Hearn. He’d prefer to do that than to have Stevenson take a lower-paying yet still risky fight against the likes of Abdullah Mason, Floyd Schofield, and Andy Cruz.

Fighting Benn in UK

“I’ll do it there [UK]. I’ll go up to 147. He ain’t that big, and skills pay the bills. If he’s swinging wild 100 times and I’m landing my shots, it’ll be an easy fight,” said Stevenson about being willing to fight Benn in the UK.

Fighting Benn in the UK would be risky, but for a different reason. It’s not that the judges would rob Stevenson. It’s the motivation and extra energy that would have fighting in front of a supportive crowd. That might be enough for Conor to overcome the skills and experience advantage that Stevenson has.

No Haney/Boots at 147

“I would fight Haney, but not at 147. I’m not going to fight Boots at 147. What do you think I am?” said Stevenson.

Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis no longer fights at 147. So, it’s not even worthy of discussion. Shakur knows that this guy has too much talent for him to fight using any style. He could run around the ring like he did against Edwin De Los Santos, and Boots would eventually catch him. It might not take that long. Shakur admits that he chose Conor Benn because he’s a novice.

“He [Benn] do [punch hard] but he’s a novice. He don’t know enough,” said Shakur about his belief that Conor doesn’t have the experience to beat him.

Shakur wouldn’t be able to fight on the ropes against Conor Benn like he did against Zepeda. He’s a much different type of puncher, and he would hurt him if he had him trapped. Stevenson isn’t crazy enough to try fighting like that. He’ll have watched enough of Conor’s past fights to know that his power is too much for him to be stationary.
