Commentator Sergio Mora predicts a short fight between Ryan Garcia and Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero on May 2nd at Times Square in New York City. Mora feels that Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) and Rolly (16-2, 13 KOs) are too powerful, and defensively flawed for the match to go into the second half of the contest.
Predicting a winner is impossible because both fighters have been hurt before. Kingry hasn’t fought a power puncher since his fight against Oscar Duarte in December 2023. Garcia’s recent fight was against the light-hitting Devin Haney, who showed very little power in their April match last year.
The October Goal
Ryan needs a victory against Romero for him to face Haney in a rematch in October. Turki Alalshikh said last week that the outcome of the fighters on the Times Square card will determine what fights he has for them. That may have been his way of saying that Haney, Ryan, and Teofimo Lopez must win their fights on May 2nd for them to get the big matches he has planned for them in October.
“He not only has to clean his image, but convince people that he’s still a power-punching, fast figher that can do it on the big stage,” said Sergio Mora to Little Giant Boxing about Ryan Garcia needing to prove himself in his comeback on May 2nd due to him testing positive for his last fight against Devin Haney.
“He’s in there with a fighter who is going to give him a lot of opportunities in Rolly Romero. He comes to knock people out. He has some holes in his defense. I think it’s going to be a short, explosive fight. Either of them can get hurt. Garcia is vulnerable defensively. I was going to say five,” said Mora when told that Ryan is predicting a knockout of Rolly by the fourth.
“That fight doesn’t go into the second half. Too much firepower, too many defensive flaws as well from both of these guys. Yeah, I think it ends in five or six rounds, but it’s going to be exciting. All these fights [on the May 2nd card] are going to end by knockout except Teofimo vs. Barboza. I think that one goes the distance and it’s going to be a close fight,” said Mora.
