Sebastian “Logan” Hernandez Reyes made quick work of Jose “El Tigre” Lopez on Saturday night, stopping him in the second round at the Recinto Ferial in Metepec, Mexico.
Hernandez Reyes (21-1, 19 KOs) was fighting for the first time since a questionable 12-round unanimous decision defeat against Junto Nakatani last December in Riyadh. Many fans felt Hernandez Reyes had done enough to win that night, despite all three judges awarding the decision to Nakatani.
There was some rust early Saturday, but once the 25-year-old began letting his hands go, Lopez had no way to contain his pressure.
Hernandez Reyes took over in the second round, pushing Lopez toward the ropes and unloading combinations from close range. Lopez had little room to escape and couldn’t produce enough offense to slow him down.
Lopez tried covering up as Hernandez Reyes continued pouring punches through and around his guard. The sustained attack left Lopez bloodied, and the referee eventually stepped between them to halt the scheduled 10-round super bantamweight contest.
It was a strong return for a fighter eager to move past the Nakatani result. Hernandez Reyes did not spend Saturday trying to box cautiously or simply collect rounds; he stayed aggressive and broke down an opponent who could not keep pace.
The stoppage gave Hernandez Reyes his 19th knockout in 22 professional fights. More importantly, he came through without jeopardizing a quick turnaround. Hernandez Reyes is scheduled to fight Kyonosuke Kameda (16-5-2) on September 23 in Osaka, Japan.
Kameda should provide considerably more resistance than Lopez offered. The trip to Osaka gives Hernandez Reyes a chance to build on Saturday’s quick finish and continue working his way toward another major fight.
