Heading into the offseason, the Seattle Seahawks have one clear roster need above all others: they need to fix their offensive line. While this unit has been problematic for the last decade and a half, the line’s issues have arguably never been worse than they were in the 2024 season, when we saw Geno Smith get sacked 50 times and Seattle completely abandon the run as they were unable to get any kind of consistent push at the line of scrimmage.
Where to begin fixing the offensive line’s issues is up for debate, though. While they obviously need help at both guard spots, the Seahawks also could use another option at center, and they might also need to find a replacement at right tackle for Abe Lucas, who can’t seem to get over his chronic knee pain issue even after surgery.
At least one analyst believes that general manager John Schneider will address that last point in the 2025 NFL draft, picking Missouri’s Armand Membou in the first round. Here’s Bleacher Report on Seattle’s need.
B/R on Seahawks-Membou
“The Seahawks have had issues keeping Abraham Lucas on the field over the last two years. He’s missed more games (21) than he’s played (13) in during that timeframe. Lucas is also entering a contract year, so the club should consider drafting his replacement this spring. Membou could be that player for Seattle. It helps that the Missouri product can line up on the inside as well.”
There’s always a chance that Lucas could finally stay healthy in 2025, in which case the Seahawks would want to sign him to a long-term contract extension and look elsewhere to help their offensive line. That’s why it’s critical to pick a prospect who has the ability to play either right tackle or one of the guard spots, a box which Membou checks.
Brandon Thorn’s scouting report on Membou (6-foot-3, 314 pounds) mentions a powerful build, explosive movement and length. Others have noted his great anticipation at the second level. Knocks on his game include hand usage and aiming points, all of which can be improved with the right coaching.
On that score, it’s difficult to know what to expect from the Seahawks. While they fired offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb they have not yet parted ways with offensive line coach Scott Huff, who came as part of a package deal with Grubb. Huff didn’t have much to work with, but the results were about as bad as it gets at this level, so it would be a surprise if he actually sticks around for 2025.
Whoever winds up coaching this unit has their work cut out for them, and much will depend on how they do their job regardless of what changes they make to the line.
