With free agency having been open for almost a month now, most of the big names are off the board.
It’s safe to assume most teams have begun focusing on the 2025 NFL Draft at this point. However, there are still some quality options available, like guard Brandon Scherff.
Kyle Soppe of Pro Football Network recently identified landing spots for the best remaining free agents, including Scherff. For the veteran blocker, Soppe identified the Seattle Seahawks as a logical destination.
Regarding Scherff’s fit in Seattle, Soppe offered the following:
Seattle was a big shaker this offseason, moving on from Geno Smith, DK Metcalf, and Tyler Lockett while buying high on Sam Darnold and hoping for a bounce-back season from Cooper Kupp.
Agree or disagree with these moves, but the message is clear that this team wants to retool and not rebuild. This was the third-worst offensive line in terms of preventing pressure and when it comes to creating room for their running backs, thus making Scherff a reasonable cheap target at this point in the proceedings.
In 2024, Scherff played in all 17 games for the Jacksonville Jaguars and started at right guard.
The veteran earned a respectable 64.7 Pro Football Focus grade that ranked 53rd out of 135 qualified guards. Scherff didn’t allow a single sack in over 1,000 snaps and was penalized just twice.
Injuries used to be a concern for Scherff, but the veteran stayed remarkably healthy during his three-year tenure with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Scherff hasn’t missed a single game since the 2021 season.
Before going to Jacksonville, Scherff spent the first seven years of his career with the Washington Commanders. The guard earned five Pro Bowl berths and one first-team All-Pro selection during that tenure and cemented himself as one of the game’s best guards.
The Seahawks desperately need to improve at both guard spots. Anthony Bradford is currently slated to start at right guard, but the youngster struggled mightily in 2024, ending with a 48.3 Pro Football Focus grade.
Scherff would immediately be an upgrade at the position and give new quarterback Sam Darnold a reliable veteran blocker. Seahawks general manager has made it known that he doesn’t like drafting guards early, so taking a flier on a guy like Scherff makes more sense for the team.
Scherff is projected to land a one-year, $6.7 million deal. The Seahawks can easily afford that.
