Seahawks predicted to trade for Commanders 29-game starter to bolster line

Seahawks predicted to trade for Commanders 29-game starter to bolster line

The Seattle Seahawks are a hard team to get a read on as we approach the 2025 season.

The team didn’t have a bad year in 2024, barely missing the playoffs. Regardless, the team decided to move on from several quality veterans like Geno Smith, DK Metcalf and Tyler Lockett.

In return, the team brought in Sam Darnold, Cooper Kupp, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling. On defense, the team made a splash by landing solid veteran edge-rusher DeMarcus Lawrence, who should immediately improve the pass rush.

If there’s one area that still needs some help, it’s the offensive line. The team did draft Grey Zabel, who should start at left guard, but three of the other starting spots on the line could be improved.

Cory Woodroof of For The Win recently identified Washington Commanders’ lineman Andrew Wylie as a realistic trade candidate for the Seahawks. Wylie has traditionally played right tackle, but the Commanders drafted Josh Conerly Jr. in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Regarding a potential Wylie-Seahawks move, Woodroof offered the following:

Speaking of the Commanders, they would be wise to go ahead and get 2025 first-round tackle Josh Conerly Jr. onto the field this fall. Wylie is a quality starter, but he doesn’t have Conerly’s upside or draft status. Washington could send Wylie up to Seattle to give him a chance to push Abraham Lucas for the right tackle job in training camp. Lucas is a good player, but he’s missed substantial time in the last two seasons. The Seahawks might struggle to find a player of Wylie’s caliber if Lucas gets hurt in the season too. Seattle could throw a sixth-round pick back to D.C. to add its potential starting right tackle or an excellent swing tackle.

In this proposal, the Seahawks would send a 2026 sixth-round selection to the Commanders for Wylie.

In 2024, Wylie started 14 games at right tackle for the Commanders and produced solid results. The veteran earned a 62.7 grade in pass protection from Pro Football Focus and didn’t allow a single sack.

As Woodroof mentioned, Wylie could push Abraham Lucas for the starting right tackle spot in Seattle. Lucas has been solid when healthy, but he’s only been able to play in 13 games over the last two seasons.

Additionally, Wylie does have experience at guard, and the Seahawks could use help on the interior as well. Christian Haynes is slated to start at right guard, and the lineman struggled mightily in 2024.

Even if Wylie wasn’t called upon to start, a sixth-round pick is not a high price to pay for a solid swing tackle. Wylie is set to have a cap hit of just over $6 million in 2025, and will enter free agency next offseason.
