Seahawks predicted to add former $39 million starting receiver to help Sam Darnold

Seahawks predicted to add former million starting receiver to help Sam Darnold

The Seattle Seahawks have completely overhauled the wide receiver room this offseason. The team started by releasing Tyler Lockett and trading DK Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers, and replacing them with Cooper Kupp and Marquez Valdes-Scantling. Despite all the changes in the room, Jaxon Smith-Njigba is ready to take over as the No.1 receiver.

Though the Seahawks have done a decent job supplying quarterback Sam Darnold with talent, they should look to add another boundary receiver, as Smith-Njigba and Kupp mainly operate in the slot, and Valdes-Scantling is more of a depth piece. Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton predicts that general manager John Schneider will fill the need by signing free agent receiver Gabe Davis.

Davis has been inconsistent and couldn’t find his groove in the Jacksonville Jaguars’ aerial attack last season. Yet he would be a solid No. 3 option in the Seahawks’ passing attack and primary big-play target if Valdes-Scantling isn’t able to carry over his momentum from the previous season in Klint Kubiak’s system.

Davis played in just ten games for the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2024 due to a torn meniscus, but he wasn’t very productive when on the field, snagging 20 receptions for 239 yards and two touchdowns. The UCF product was released by the Jaguars in May after one season with the team.

Though Davis is coming off a significant injury and didn’t look great last year, the 26-year-old is still capable of producing explosive plays. During his four-year tenure with the Buffalo Bills, Davis averaged over 16 yards per catch in three of four seasons and also posted over six touchdowns in each campaign. His best season came in 2022, where he posted 836 yards and seven touchdowns.

Seattle lost their primary deep threat in Metcalf this offseason, so signing Davis to replace him would be a savvy move. The former fourth-round pick should be pretty cheap to sign, and a change of scenery could lead to a bounce-back season for the dynamic playmaker.

Additionally, Davis wouldn’t have a ton of pressure on him to be the top guy, as Smith-Njigba and Kupp should be the leading receivers in the offense this year. Davis’ role would be creating chunk plays and being an electric deep threat, which he excelled at in Buffalo.
