Seahawks GM details what led to DK Metcalf trade to Steelers

This offseason, the Seattle Seahawks shook things up, making several massive changes to their roster and coaching staff after finishing the 2024 season, their first under head coach Mike Macdonald, with a 10-7 record.

One of the most shocking moves that Seattle made in recent months was shipping star wide receiver DK Metcalf (and a 2025 sixth-round pick) to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a second-round pick (No. 52 overall) and a seventh-round pick (No. 223).

While Metcalf had made it clear that he wanted to be moved, the fact that he actually was around the start of the league year was surprising to many. However, Seahawks general manager John Schneider recently explained that it was building for a while.

“You know, DK and I had very open conversations the last couple years about his future, and what that looked like and what he wanted. We always have to do what’s best for the organization, first and foremost. That’s what drives us, everybody throughout the National Football League that does what we do.  And it was apparent that he wanted to move on,” Schneider told NFL analyst Rich Eisen earlier this week. “And so, when we got back from the combine, we had some real, clear, direct conversations.

“And at that point, we decided it was probably best for both of us to move forward.”

Despite Metcalf receiving a new contract the second he landed in Pittsburgh, Schneider also insisted that the move had nothing to do with money.

“No, it really wasn’t [salary-related], and it was interested because it wasn’t like animosity either. It was like, he really, really wanted a fresh start,” Schneider told Eisen. “And it’s not like we went into the offseason thinking this would be a possibility, but he was just, he was pretty dug in on it.

“So it ended up working out for both clubs, working out for us, and working out for Pittsburgh, and we wish him the best. He’s a great guy and obviously a high-end competitor.”

The Steelers got a wide receiver who has caught 438 passes for 6,324 yards and 48 touchdowns over six seasons, while Seattle used that second-round pick they got in return to move up and select South Carolina safety Nick Emmanwori.
