Rejoice, football fans, the 2025 NFL Draft is less than one month away.
The Tennessee Titans own the top pick in the draft, and most draft experts believe the team will keep the pick and select Miami quarterback Cam Ward, who is considered to be the crown jewel of a weak quarterback class.
However, as is the case every year, there could be some teams interested in trading up to the top pick. Like the Titans, the New York Giants are another quarterback-needy team currently slated to pick at No. 3, but the team is unlikely to trade up after recently adding both Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson.
Jarrett Bailey of Touchdown Wire believes the New Orleans Saints could be a surprise team that’s interested in trading up. The team has Derek Carr, but the veteran isn’t a long-term answer at the position.
Regarding the Saints possibly trading up for the No.1 pick and Ward, Bailey offered the following:
Mickey Loomis looks at the books and sees that he somehow gave the Saints $33 million in cap space. He begins to celebrate, and Kellen Moore siezes the moment.
“Mickey, let’s just go balls to the wall and trade up to take Cam Ward,” he says.
“Sure, do whatever you want!” Loomis replies as he does the Cotton Eye Joe.
In this scenario, the Saints would give up pick Nos. 9, 40, 184, a 2026 second-round pick, and a 2026 fifth-round pick in exchange for the top pick in 2025.
The Titans only have two picks in the top 100, so this trade would allow the team to reload and add talent to one of the game’s worst rosters. The Saints, meanwhile, would get an exciting, young prospect to build around.
In 2024, Ward threw for 4,313 yards with 39 touchdowns and seven interceptions. The quarterback led all FBS passers in passing touchdowns and finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting.
Ward isn’t a perfect prospect, but the quarterback has tools NFL teams will be interested in. Ward has plus arm strength and the athleticism to make plays with his legs.
Adding Ward to Kellen Moore’s inaugural Saints offense would be exciting. The quarterback would be throwing to one of the game’s best young receivers in Chris Olave and Alvin Kamara is still a productive running back.
However, it seems unlikely that the Titans would give up on landing Ward. Will Levis was awful in 2024, and the only other quarterbacks on the roster are Brandon Allen and Tim Boyle. What would the team’s plan be if Ward isn’t the pick?
