Despite the arrival of a new coaching staff, the New Orleans Saints will be keeping things status quo under center.
Whenever a new coaching staff takes over a team, there’s never a guarantee the previous personnel will remain intact. This is especially true when there are questions about the direction of the game’s most important position.
During a Wednesday press conference at the NFL combine, Saints general manager Mickey Loomis made it clear what the team has decided in terms of the decision pertaining to the future of quarterback Derek Carr.
“I think we feel like we’ve got a guy we can win with,” Loomis told reporters.
Carr’s second season with New Orleans was marred by injuries. He wound up appearing in 10 games due to an oblique injury that forced him to miss three contests, followed by a concussion that kept him off the field for the final four games of the season.
Carr completed 67.7% of his passes for 2,145 yards, 15 touchdowns, five interceptions and a 101.0 passer rating during the 2024 season.
The Saints seem confident in running it back with Carr, at least for another season. New head coach Kellen Moore, fresh off a Super Bowl victory as Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator, echoed Loomis’ thoughts.
“We feel fortunate to have Derek here, the experience he has. He’s a big-time quarterback in this league,” Moore said Wednesday.
The Saints are expected to be well over the NFL salary cap again, and Carr’s $51.4 million cap hit in 2025 won’t make things easier for the longtime general manager.
So while there will likely be some decisions to make with Carr’s contract, it appears the four-time Pro Bowler is staying put.
