Ryan Giggs, 51, steps down from Salford City job as Man Utd legend targets new manager role

RYAN GIGGS has left Salford City – and wants a return to management.

The Manchester United legend had been director of football at the League Two club where he also helped out boss Karl Robinson on matchday.

But SunSport understands Giggs is no longer involved on a day-to-day basis at Salford, who face Swindon at home on Saturday.

Giggs, 51, was previously Wales manager and qualified his country for Euro 2020.

But Giggs missed the finals after he stood down from his post following his arrest on suspicion of assault in November 2020.

Jurors failed to reach a verdict on subsequent assault charges as well as those of coercive or controlling behaviour.

A retrial was abandoned because the alleged victim – his ex, Kate Greville – was unwilling to give evidence.

Giggs, who was replaced by Robert Page in the Wales hotseat, later admitted it was “heartbreaking” not to lead the Dragons at the Euros, which was delayed by a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The ex-United winger, who won 13 Prem titles under Sir Alex Ferguson, said back in January: “I had the stint as Wales manager and loved it.

“Eventually I’d like to get back into management. On matchday I still get as excited as ever, probably more than ever.”

Giggs and fellow Class of ‘92 members Nicky Butt, Paul Scholes and Phil Neville were bought out by David Beckham and Gary Neville, who completed a takeover of Salford as part of a new consortium back in May.

United hero Giggs missed out again on a Premier League Hall of Fame nomination this month despite winning 13 titles at Old Trafford.

SunSport columnist Troy Deeney criticised the selection process last Saturday and the Prem announced they will change the voting system in future with the final say shifting from fans to existing Hall of Fame members.

Giggs’ former United team-mates Gary Neville, Patrice Evra, Michael Carrick and Teddy Sheringham were among the new nominees.
