Ryan Garcia Is America’s Biggest Boxing Star, Says Gareth A. Davies

Ryan Garcia’s combination of popularity, marketability, and drawing power has elevated him above every other American boxer in the eyes of veteran broadcaster Gareth A. Davies, who believes no fighter in the United States can currently match his reach inside or outside the ring.

Garcia’s appeal stretches well beyond his WBC welterweight title. Few American fighters can realistically be linked to potential bouts against Devin Haney, Shakur Stevenson, Teofimo Lopez, and Conor Benn while generating massive public interest for every potential matchup. That broad appeal is why Davies believes Ryan sits above every other American boxer.

“Ryan Garcia is the lynch pin for the giant fights in America right now,” Davies said to talkSPORT Boxing. “The return of Gervonta Davis for a second fight. The return of Devin Haney and those two fighting each other… The fights there with Teofimo Lopez, the fights with Shakur Stevenson. For me, he’s the golden goose because he is probably the most well-known boxer in America right now.”

This perspective places Ryan ahead of some of the sport’s biggest American names. If Davies is right, Garcia has moved ahead of Devin Haney, Shakur Stevenson, and David Benavidez as the country’s biggest boxing attraction. All three have accomplished far more inside the ring than Garcia, yet Davies believes none currently matches his mainstream recognition.

Spencer Oliver shared a similar view.

“He is arguably the biggest name in American boxing right now,” Oliver said. “His social media presence is second to none. We live in a world of numbers today. When you have that and you can fight, and you’re the current WBC world champion, you’re going to be a star.”

Ryan’s September 12 title defense against Conor Benn gives him another opportunity to reinforce that status. A victory would keep him positioned for major crossover events against boxing’s elite.

Not everyone will agree with Davies. Many fans will argue Gervonta Davis remains American boxing’s biggest attraction despite his infrequent schedule. Ryan, however, continues to occupy the center of many discussions involving the sport’s biggest potential fights, giving Davies’ opinion a solid foundation.
