Ryan Garcia and Devin Haney verbally argued on stage today at the press conference in Los Angeles to promote their respective fights against Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero and Jose Ramirez.
Kingry had been playing it cool, focusing on talking about his monosyllabic opponent, Rolly (16-2, 13 KOs), who appeared mentally disengaged on stage. Haney took offense to the press conference monitor, Todd Grishham, asking Jose Ramirez if he’s going to target his chin.
This was literally the best press conference I’ve ever seen in my life. Congrats to Ryan, Haney, Arnold Barboza Jr., and especially the eyeliner-wearing Teofimo Lopez. He was in pure theatrical mode. Teo is a natural actor.
Garcia vs. Haney: Round 2?
From Haney, brought up that Ryan had PEDS in his system when they fought last April, and was using that as a way to weasel out of admitting that he wouldn’t take his left hooks. Ryan then went off at that point, unleashing on Haney, telling him he was “set-up” with the Ostarine stuff that was in his system. Kingry was like a giant bow slowly pulled back for 10 months and he finally got his chance to vent.
Devin Haney: “Of course, the big fight is Ryan Garcia, but I can’t look past Jose Ramirez,” said Devin during today’s press conference in Los Angeles. “I know he’s a tough competitor and he’s coming to win. To get to the Ryan fight, I’ve got to beat Jose Ramirez, and that’s what I’m looking to do. A better version [of Haney].
“I’ve been in the gym, working quietly behind the scenes ever since the Ryan fight, getting better, perfecting my craft and you’re going to see a new and improved version of Devin Haney. My main focus is Jose Ramirez and then lining it up with Ryan Garcia,” said Haney when asked if the punishment Ryan was given for testing positive was enough in his eyes.
“Whatever punishment, that’s what it was and I look to punish him in the ring.”
Jose Ramirez: “I’m thankful. I’m going to go out on May 2nd and do what I have to do. I know making my way to 147, I’m going to be a lot stronger, a lot faster, and a lot healthier, and feeling very rejuvenated. So, I’m looking forward to making a statement on May 2nd.
“We’ll see. You can’t really ask that,” said Ramirez when asked if Haney will be a more difficult opponent than Arnold Barboza. “It’s a different division. It’s going to be a different Jose Ramirez. Of course, I’m going to test his chin. That’s my job. Even if he was 31-0 with 31 knockouts, my job is to test his chin.”
Haney: “I don’t understand what you mean by chin. I got up every single time against somebody on PEDs. So, that showed I had a chin.”
The King Speaks
Ryan Garcia: “I’m just focused on whopping Devin Haney’s a** again. That’s all I’m worried about. Not to redeem myself, but to cement that bull s*** Ostarine, which you probably did set up. We know you did that. Where’s your little brother. Is your brother in the house, because he knew before anybody else, and you don’t answer that question.”
Haney: “How did you test positive?
Ryan: “Corruption at its finest. They couldn’t take the loss. What’s up? I see you. I don’t want to touch that. I don’t know what you’re doing with your hands, buddy.”
Haney: “You took your punishment because you knew you were guilty.”
Ryan: “Ostarine don’t protect you from blocking a left hook. You got hit 1000 times. You got dribbled off the canvas. You know nothing was taken. You know damn well.”
Haney: “Kids, do not do drugs. Do not do drugs, kids. PEDs.”
Ryan: “You had that in your back pocket.”
