Ryan Garcia Claims Benn Overlooks His Ring Intelligence

Ryan Garcia Claims Benn Overlooks His Ring Intelligence

Ryan Garcia believes Conor Benn sees only his speed, power, and natural talent without understanding the work he has put into mastering boxing. Benn will get the chance to test that claim when he challenges Ryan for the WBC welterweight title this Saturday, September 12, at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

“I don’t think Conor understands how much I actually do love the game of boxing,” Ryan said during Zuffa Boxing’s Road to Garcia vs. Benn. “I don’t think he understands how much I actually know about boxing. I think that he just sees me as talented, but he doesn’t know all the levels I go to master the craft. I just don’t think he understands how good I am.”

Hand speed and the left hook have carried Ryan through much of his career, but his ring intelligence has not received the same praise. He can be patient when waiting for an opponent to overcommit, as Devin Haney learned each time he was caught by the hook in their 2024 fight.

The less flattering side is his habit of retreating in straight lines until his back reaches the ropes. He often relies on a high guard, clinch, or awkward turn instead of circling into open space. Benn will attempt to close those exits, making Ryan’s footwork an immediate test of the boxing depth he is advertising.

Aggression also creates danger for the challenger. Benn was dropped twice by Cedrick Peynaud early in his career, and he can still rush inside without setting up his attacks. Those entries give Ryan opportunities to land his fastest counter.

Charging forward carelessly during the opening three rounds would leave Benn exposed. Ryan is at his most dangerous when an opponent supplies the movement and gives him a stationary target. One poorly timed leap may be all the champion needs.

The body offers Benn his clearest route to slowing Ryan. Gervonta Davis stopped him with a liver shot in 2023, and Benn throws heavy hooks downstairs when he gets within punching range. Sustained body work could reduce Ryan’s movement and take some of the speed from his counters.

Reaching that distance is the difficult part. Ryan owns the faster hands and is more dangerous from the outside, leaving his challenger dependent on close-quarters exchanges and a punishing pace.

Returning to 147 pounds raises another question for Benn. He added size for two fights with Chris Eubank Jr., and camp footage shows a noticeably leaner fighter coming back down to welterweight. If the cut weakens his legs or stamina, trapping Ryan will become increasingly difficult.

This is Ryan’s opportunity to support his claim. Knocking Benn out with another hook would confirm the power everyone already recognizes. Escaping the ropes, controlling distance, working inside, and adjusting to the body attack would demonstrate the boxing IQ he believes Benn has failed to appreciate.
