Ryan Garcia gave fans a heads-up today, letting them know he’s heading into his next fight in 65 days on May 2nd at Turki Alalshikh’s event in New York City.

“Run It Back?”

Garcia (24-1, 20 KOs) said in a message he’s going to “run it back in New York.” That doesn’t make much sense, given that he’s supposed to be fighting Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero on May 2nd. Devin Haney is expected to be on the Garcia-Romero undercard, fighting former WBC and WBO light welterweight champion Jose Ramirez in a risky tune-up.

Boxing fans prefer that Garcia and Haney fight their rematch right away in May rather than waiting until October. Haney’s punch resistance is very questionable it could be a mistake of letting him fight former champion Ramirez on Turki’s May 2nd card. I wouldn’t recommend that move.

Kingry will be eligible to fight in New York on April 20 after his one-year suspension ends. He’ll have to monitor closely what supplements he takes and who is giving him what to prevent testing positive for a banned PED a second time. If Ryan is suspended again, it could be another year out of his career, and it would be difficult for him to get back to where he was previously.

The fight on May 2nd against former WBA light welterweight champion Rolly Romero (16-2, 13 KOs) is for Garcia to prepare him for his rematch with Haney in October. Turki didn’t say whether those plans will change if Garcia or Haney lose their warmup fights on May 2nd. That would taint their rematch if they’re coming off losses because he would be expected to avenge those defeats.

Rolly had success sparring with Garcia in the past, and it will be interesting to see if he can overpower him to get a quick knockout. Ryan only fought in brief intervals in his victory over Haney on April 20th last year at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. That’s why the fight was a 12-round majority decision win for Ryan. He dropped Haney three times in the fight, but he was losing rounds because he was tired.

NYC Date Set

“What’s up, everybody. It’s me, Ryan Garcia. I’m heading to New York on May 2nd. I’m going to be there with my friend, Turki Alalshikh. I’m going to run it back in New York. Let’s get it,” said Ryan Garcia to Ring Magazine about his next fight.
