Ryan Garcia and Shakur Stevenson went at it today on X, trading insults about popularity. Shakur initiated the trash talk after a harmless post by Kingry, in which he quoted the late Roger Mayweather, saying, “Most people don’t know shit about boxing.”
The Wealth Gap
Stevenson replied to Ryan’s message by saying, “Especially you.” It’s unclear why the WBC lightweight champion Shakur felt the need to mess with Garcia. Still, perhaps he’s bitter about not having had the chance to fight him in the past or about the massive $50 million fortune Garcia has accumulated in recent years.
Stevenson has missed out on the mega-million-dollar fights that Kingry has been in. He’s been left behind despite capturing three division world titles in his eight-year pro career. What that shows is that winning world titles doesn’t translate to accumulating wealth.
Ryan got the opportunity to fight Gervonta Davis on April 22, 2023, and made $30 million from that fight alone. Although Garcia lost to Tank by a seventh-round knockout, the fight led to clashes against Devin Haney and Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero, which netted him additional millions to make him one of the wealthiest active boxers in the lower weight classes.
Shakur Stevenson: “Ryan, you lost to Rolly [Romero] Lmao. I would have to be a big star who’s a**.”
Garcia reminded Shakur that he’s not popular, and fans aren’t lining up to see him fight. He says that the complimentary tickets given out for Stevenson’s fights don’t count as part of ticket sales.
Instagram Followers Speak Loudly
Ryan then pointed out that no one outside of boxing knows who Stevenson is. In other words, he has no reach with non-fans. To highlight the difference between the two, Kingry has 12 million followers on Instagram, compared to Shakur’s 1.2 million.
What this means is that when Garcia fights on PPV, he has a better chance of bringing in buys than Stevenson. With the way things are looking, Shakur has a lot of ground to make up to reach the level Ryan is at now.
The Popularity Contest
It’s questionable whether Stevenson’s potential fight against Teofimo Lopez in January or February 2026 will result in a boost in popularity or a decline. Even if Stevenson wins, he may not gain any new fans if he runs the entire fight like he did against Edwin De Los Santos in their November 2023 clash.
