Ruben Amorim to hold showdown Man Utd talks next week as fears arise he could RESIGN despite £200million spending spree

RUBEN AMORIM will hold talks with his Manchester United bosses next week after his troubled reign hit a new low.

The Portuguese boss retains the support of the Old Trafford hierarchy despite a disastrous Carabao Cup exit at Grimsby on Wednesday.

But he faces a key run of games with a home game against Burnley on Saturday, followed by Manchester City and Chelsea after the international break.

And some of the players he has exiled are understood to be watching the situation closely – as they could yet find a route back with the Red Devils.

As his problems mount, he is also facing a goalkeeping headache with the clock ticking on a £17million move for Antwerp’s Senne Lammens before Monday night’s deadline.

Amorim will have to choose between Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir for the visit of the Clarets – and both have dropped clangers this season.

The former Sporting Lisbon coach pulled no punches after the nightmare at Blundell Park – saying some players had ‘spoken loudly’ about what they wanted to happen.

Club sources say he was emotional after the game and he is expected to clarify his comments at his press conference on Friday afternoon.

But he said on Wednesday night: “Something has to change, and you’re not going to change 22 players again. It’s hard to face everything.

“We move to the next game, then we have time to decide things.

“Let’s focus on the next game and then we have time to think about things.

We have a job to do, a job to prepare, and then we will stop and think things through.”

Owner Jim Ratcliffe and chief exec Omar Berrada were not believed to be at Blundell Park for the Carabao Cup horror show.

That meant director of football Jason Wilcox was the only member of the football leadership team at the tie.

Yet the feeling is Amorim still has their backing after a £200 million summer spending spree was sanctioned over the summer and the 40-year-old has always been viewed as their man for the long-term.

Some have questioned whether he could walk away with his record over a dismal 10 months showing no signs of improving.

Amorim said after a home defeat to West Ham in May he would walk away without compensation if it was decided he was not the right man for the job.

There were reports he had offered to resign in January – just three months into the job, although this has never been confirmed.

Meanwhile some of the players snubbed by Amorim since pre-season started are now wondering if they could have a future at Old Trafford.

Five first teamers – Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia – were placed in the ‘bomb squad’ and told to train on their own.

Rashford has since joined Barcelona on loan, Garnacho is heading for Chelsea, while others are hoping to line up moves away from Old Trafford before Monday’s deadline.

England midfielder Kobbie Mainoo is also weighing up his options after being used sparingly – although he did play the whole game at Grimsby.

Man Utd ratings v Grimsby

MANCHESTER UNITED are at rock bottom after the biggest cup upset saw the club crash out of the Carabao Cup second-round to League Two Grimsby Town on penalties.

Ruben Amorim’s United lost to a four-tier side for the first time ever.

The home fans sang “you’re getting sacked in the morning” to Amorim throughout and you can’t help but wonder if they’re right.

Here’s how SunSport’s Katherine Walsh rated United’s flops at Blundell Park.
