Rosado Slams Berlanga’s ‘Embarrassing’ Choice of Opponent, Claims He’s ‘Way Better’ Than Gonzalez-Ortiz

Gabe Rosado says he’d like to face Edgar Berlanga next if he can’t get the fight he wants against Jaime Munguia or Caleb Plant. The veteran Rosado says he’s “way better” than Berlanga’s opponent, Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz, last Saturday night in Orlando, Florida.

Gabe feels that it was “embarrassing” for Berlanga (23-0, 18 KOs) to fight the 35-year-old Gonzalez-Ortiz (20-1-1, 16 KOs) in the co-feature on DAZN and came in overweight as well. Rosado felt that it was all-around embarrassing on Edgar’s part.

Matchmaking Scrutiny

Many fans agree and wonder how Berlanga could fight a badly out-of-shape, old, and marginal fighter in the chief support bout on the Austin ‘Ammo’ Williams vs. Patrice Volny card at the Caribe Royale. DAZN should have put their foot down and insisted that Berlanga at least fight someone from the top 15 at 168 or 175.

He looked like an out-of-shape light heavyweight when he entered the ring. It didn’t matter against that ham & egger Gonzalez-Ortiz, as Berlanga quickly dropped him three times in scoring a first-round knockout.

It’s unlikely that Berlanga will choose to fight the veteran Rosado because either Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn will line up a fight between Edgar and Plant or Munguia. If not him, one of the other promoters will fix him up.

Future Plans

Berlanga is probably hoping that Turki Alalshikh will take an interest in him and sign him to a three or four-fight deal so he can make mega-millions on his cards.

Turki has to know that Berlanga lacks the talent to beat top fighters at 168 or 175. So, if he’s going to sign him, he’s got to be okay with watching him repeatedly lose unless he’s artificially propped up with the help of careful matchmaking. That’s what Top Rank and Hearn were doing.

Hearn did deliver Berlanga the fight against Canelo Alvarez, but the other fighters he matched him with were subpar. He matched him against Padraig McCrory, Jason Quigley, Canelo, and Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz.

“I would love that fight. Yeah, I haven’t fought in a while. I fought everybody,” said Gabe Rosado to Fino Boxing, talking about wanting to fight Edgar Berlanga next if he can’t get the fights he wants. “He just came off a win [Jonathan Gonzalez-Ortiz].

“He’s calling out guys like [Caleb] Plant and [Jaime] Munguia. I get it because those are really big fights, but if those fights don’t pan out for him, I’m way better than the dude he fought today. The dude he fought today, come on, bro.

“How do you go? Berlanga came in overweight, but he was in shape. How do you go to a weigh-in in a top fight on DAZN? Was that the co-main? That’s how you come? Man, that’s embarrassing,” said Rosado.
