“You’re going to tell me Teo’s quicker than Ryan?” Rolly told Fight Hub TV. “You’re going to tell me Teo punches harder than Ryan? Who punches harder than Ryan?”
Teofimo is not a natural welterweight or a devastating puncher. His best work came at lightweight, where his sharp counterpunching carried greater force against smaller opponents.
Moving to 140 pounds exposed the limits of his style. He defeated Josh Taylor clearly in 2023, but Taylor had already declined physically after difficult fights and draining weight cuts. That remains Teofimo’s last strong performance against a top opponent.
His subsequent outings told a different story. Jamaine Ortiz made him look ordinary by boxing from the outside. Steve Claggett backed him toward the ropes and forced him into an unnecessarily difficult fight. Arnold Barboza Jr. took Teofimo through another close tactical contest before Shakur Stevenson dismantled him.
Top Rank kept Teofimo away from several of the most dangerous fighters at 140. Even with careful matchmaking, he never established control over the weight class.
Jumping directly to 147 after the Stevenson loss magnifies his physical disadvantages. Rolly is naturally bigger, stronger, and accustomed to trading punches with full-sized welterweights. He also neutralized Garcia’s speed and power without becoming hesitant.
Teofimo offers more punch variety than Rolly, but clever timing means little if he cannot hurt Rolly or prevent him from advancing. Loading up on isolated counter shots, as Teofimo has repeatedly done in recent years, will give the champion opportunities to pressure him.
Teofimo belongs at 135 pounds, although returning there would not guarantee success against the division’s leading fighters. At welterweight, he must produce a level of performance missing since the Taylor victory. Otherwise, Rolly’s size and physical strength will make Saturday a long night.
