Robert Garcia Eyes Big Names As Raymond Muratalla Begins 140 Pound Push

Trainer Robert Garcia made one thing clear after Top Rank asked fans who Raymond Muratalla should fight next. The new IBF lightweight champion is headed to 140 pounds, and his team wants recognizable opponents.

“Anyone at 140! Frank Martin’s with Top Rank now, heard Keyshawn needs a fight now, or anyone ranked high at 140 that will get us a title shot. Line them up,” said Robert on X.

The names Garcia chose are revealing. Frank Martin is one of the better-known names at 140 after signing with Top Rank. Keyshawn Davis also brings name recognition despite uncertainty over whether he stays at welterweight. Garcia bypassed lesser-known contenders entirely, signaling a direct push toward established opponents.

A fight with Keyshawn faces one obvious problem. Since pulling out of his ordered WBO welterweight title fight against Devin Haney, Keyshawn has repeatedly targeted 147 pounds. If he remains there, Muratalla would have to skip light welterweight entirely to make the fight. Davis also appears focused on bigger names, making a deal uncertain.

Rankings present another question. The WBO previously placed Keyshawn near the top of its welterweight rankings before he fought in the division. It is unclear whether the sanctioning body would take the same approach with the reigning IBF lightweight champion.

If Muratalla is not placed near the top of the rankings, Robert Garcia’s next move is easy to identify. Wins over contenders such as Martin or other highly ranked light welterweights would strengthen Muratalla’s standing while increasing his visibility in the division. Fighting regularly would also help his case by giving the sanctioning bodies more opportunities to move him toward a title shot.

Garcia’s comments show his team has little interest in easing Muratalla into the division. Instead, they appear focused on securing recognizable opponents who can move him toward another world title.
