Richardson Hitchins bragged today about his June 14th fight against George Kambosos Jr. being “almost sold out” for The Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City. The venue seats 5,600 fans, so it’s not surprising that it’s almost out. Fans on social media attribute the ticket sales to Kambosos Jr’s popularity, not Hitchins. He’s a complete unknown to the casual boxing public.
Andy Cruz: Real Ticket Mover?
Some fans believe the real reason the tickets are selling is the interest in lightweight contender Andy Cruz being added to the card in an IBF title eliminator against Hironori Mishiro. The 2020 Olympic gold medalist Cruz (5-0, 2 KOs) is considered the best talent on the entire card and should be the main event fighter.
Andy Cruz is regarded as the heir apparent to take over as the King of the lightweight division now that Gervonta Davis is talking retirement. Even if he weren’t, Cruz is still viewed as the guy to succeed him.
Hitchins (19-0, 7 KOs) picked arguably the weakest contenders in the IBF’s top 15 at 140 to make his first defense. He could have selected one of these killers instead of the struggling little ‘Emperor’ Kambosos:
– Jamaine Ortiz
– Elvis Rodriguez
– Subriel Matias
– Kenneth Sims
Hitchins’ selection of Kambosos (22-3, 10 KOs) suggests that he wants to milk his IBF title for as long as possible to ensure he doesn’t lose the strap immediately. Richardson’s fighting style is a combination of Devin Haney and Shakur Stevenson. He’s a blend of the two, and that’s not meant to be a compliment.
Haney 2.0 for Hearn
Fans have booed some of Hitchins’ recent fights, because he moves and holds too much. Moreover, he doesn’t have the killer instinct. When Hearn’s contract with Haney ended in 2024, Hitchins was the perfect replacement. It’s as if Devin never left.
My fight is almost sold Out And we still got a month to Go First main event Ever in nyc Proud of myself MSG JUNE 14th movie 🔥🗽 I’m telling ya grab y’all tickets !!!
