The New England Patriots have several decisions to make this offseason, including what to do at the quarterback position for 2025.
It’s obvious that 2024 first-round pick Drake Maye will be their starter, but after sixth-round pick Joe Milton III showed out in the Week 18 win against the Buffalo Bills, there are questions about the backup spot.
New England could keep Milton on his rookie deal and make him the primary backup, or they could look to flip the young quarterback for a draft pick or a player at a position of need.
According to the Boston Sports Journal’s Greg Bedard, the latter could happen later this offseason.
“I thought the Patriots would hold off on entertaining a trade of Joe Milton for at least another season, but there’s increasing belief around the NFL that the Patriots are at least contemplating a trade of Milton this offseason,” Bedard wrote. “Again, I’m not saying he’s on the block right now, but the Patriots will likely consider it when everything settles with the front office and coaching staff.”
With the lack of talent at quarterback in this year’s draft, teams may be willing to give up a higher pick for Milton than the sixth-round selection that the Patriots used on him last year.
They also have holes at offensive tackle, wide receiver, defensive line, edge rusher, linebacker and cornerback that need to be addressed, and some team could offer New England a player that fills one of those needs.
If that happens, the Patriots could add a veteran backup who could be an extra mentor for Maye to learn from in his second season in the NFL and potentially first in a new offense.
