There is a lot more to the New York Rangers and Vancouver Canucks trade talks that a lot of people may not know.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that trade talks between the Rangers and Canucks for J.T. Miller were progressing before it all ultimately fell through.
There have been conflicting reports as to why a deal was not finalized.
The Athletic reported one source confirmed that a disagreement on the protection structure of a first-round pick was a key hurdle.
Meanwhile, NHL insider Frank Seravalli believes there was pushback from the Rangers to take on Miller’s entire contract.
Friedman is under the impression that things are actually more complicated than even he originally thought.
“I think they’re going to keep looking at it. You know, the Rangers thing, I don’t know where that stands right now,” Friedman said. “I’ve had some people say to me that one was a bit more complicated than has been even reported publicly, even by myself, on why that one got turned down. So I’m still trying to get to the bottom of that one.”
The Rangers appear to be the heavy favorites to acquire Miller, especially since the Carolina Hurricanes, a team linked to the veteran forward, just traded for Mikko Rantanen.
The NHL Trade Deadline is on Mar. 7 as the Miller sweepstakes should continue to heat up in the weeks leading up to the big day.
