With the New York Rangers slipping out of the playoff picture, their trade deadline strategy is beginning to change.
The Rangers have already traded Jacob Trouba and Kaapo Kakko as the team may not be done with their fire sale just yet.
NHL insider Frank Seravalli provided some insight into the direction in which the Rangers plan to go.
“Right now, they’re trending to be sellers,” Seravalli said. “But, I still don’t believe that Chris Drury is going to sit back and do nothing.
“I think they’re going to be buyers for the long haul, but maybe not fixing this season, if that makes any sense.”
There is a sense that Rangers general manager Chris Drury has lost faith in the team’s core and he is looking not necessarily to rebuild, but reshape the Blueshirts.
As New York’s playoff hopes continue to get slimmer and slimmer, players including Chris Kreider, Will Borgen and Ryan Lindgren have all been the subject of trade rumors.
If the Rangers find themselves in a similar position in a month from now, expect Drury to start accumulating assets to build for the future.
