Rangers ‘confident of Steven Gerrard return’ as major update emerges ahead of talks over ex-manager’s stunning comeback

STEVEN GERRARD will hold talks with Rangers chiefs in London on Thursday.

And ahead of that meeting, a positive update has reportedly emerged from the Light Blues’ side.

Gerrard, 45, has emerged as the clear favourite to succeed Russell Martin as Rangers boss.

Martin was axed on Sunday after an ill-fated 123 days in charge.

Gers chairman Andrew Cavenagh pulled the plug on the former Southampton boss just hours after the 1-1 draw with Falkirk.

Martin’s dismissal came amid intense pressure from fans after a dismal start to the campaign that saw him win just five of his 17 games as head coach.

Former Rangers boss Gerrard quickly emerged as one of the leading candidates for the vacancy and has been the odds-on favourite with the bookies.

Things will take a step forward on Thursday when the Liverpool legend meets Gers supremos Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe in London for talks over a sensational return to the Ibrox dugout.

Gerrard, 45, has been out of work since leaving Saudi outfit Al-Ettifaq at the beginning of the year.

He led Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title in 2021 before bringing an end to a three-year stint in charge just months later to take over at Aston Villa.

Four years on, Gerrard will now hold those discussions over a remarkable comeback at the club.

SunSport told you on Wednesday how he’d have those face-to-face talks in the UK capital.

And ahead of that crunch meeting, a positive update has emerged.

Fabrizio Romano is reporting that that Gerrard’s return to Rangers is ‘closer than ever’ with negotiations ‘advancing well.’

He also claims that Rangers are ‘confident to bring Steven (Gerrard) back.’

The Liverpool and England legend appeared on Rio Ferdinand Presents earlier this week.

In conversation with his former international teammate, Gerrard revealed he had “unfinished business” with his managerial career.

He revealed he was “working on” a boss comeback and stated his desire to take over a team that was competing to win.

Gerrard told Ferdinand: “I want to be at a team that’s going to compete to win because I think that suits me better.

“I think certain jobs and certain clubs would suit my style and the way I like to go about it.

“But I’ve also got time now where I’m not in a rush, where I know the right people that are out there to make me a stronger and a better coach.

“They’re the people I need to find.

“Because if I get the right match with them people around me, I know and I’ve proved I can be successful as a manager.

“And that’s what I’m working on in the background now.”
